Doing Something Big

I am so excited. In two days I will premiere the first episode of my web series, “Krystal Grant Stomps The Yard“. This is truly a labor of love and I’ve worked so hard on all the production aspects of it. My family has been so gracious and supportive of me over the past three months while I put this project together. It’s only because of them that I could make this happen. They’ve stomped the yard right along with me and assisted me with camera work, interviews and ideas.

On February 1 you will finally get a chance to see the first installment of the series that I’ve been repeatedly tweeting and facebooking about. My goal is to educate the world on the importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. I hope this series will encourage high school students to consider an HBCU as their college of choice.  I also hope HBCU alumni will be more willing to give back to their college.

I have to admit that I’m quite nervous. This is the first “big” thing I’ve done. And I consider this a pretty big thing. I’ve spent time, effort, and money to make this come to pass. I hope you enjoy this series and become inspired. Be sure to subscribe to “KG Stomps The Yard” on YouTube so you won’t miss any episodes. Share the link with your friends. And leave a comment to let me know what you think.

Blogging, Cheaper Than Therapy

In June of 2011 I began a “30 Days of Blogging” series here on KrystalGrant.com . I decided, due to major boredom, that I’d blog everyday for 30 days. This would be a major feat for me being that my normal blogging schedule was only 2-3 times per week.

On June 1st I began. It was great for the first 7 or 8 days. I was excited to update my site with new content for all to enjoy. And since I would be home from work for the entire summer I was positive there’d be nothing to prevent me from creating fresh posts.

Then my mother died unexpectedly (the day before my 35th birthday). This was the worst thing that had ever happened in my life. And during the time of her passing this blog was the absolute last thing on my mind. But it was all that I had. All that I could control. So, I blogged about her death and I let you know exactly how I was feeling. I probably cried through every post during the week of planning her funeral. But this blog was all that I had. All that I could control. So I wrote- everyday.

The week after she died my family went on a much needed vacation to Myrtle Beach. It was an awful trip. Don’t get me wrong, the beach was beautiful. The weather was fantastic. But I wasn’t present. I was still in the tornado of my mother’s passing. I remember very little about the trip except that I continued to blog-every single day. It was all that I had. All that I could control.

My “30 Days of Blogging” series continued throughout the month of June and on into July. I was depressed. I sat at home with my laptop attached to my thighs and blogged- everyday. It was all that I had. All that I could control.

July passed by and I continued to blog throughout the first few weeks of August. It was time for me to start another school year and I made an attempt to blog everyday, but I couldn’t keep up. Many teachers know how hectic the first few weeks of school can be. And since I was at a new school teaching a new grade, I became overwhelmed and my “30 Days of Blogging” series which has lasted well past 60 days came to an end.

Now, with the start of 2012 I’ve been blogging 5 days a week. Monday through Friday I post new content for all to read. And on Saturdays and Sundays I take a break ( just as if this were a “real” job). Some bloggers may find it difficult to post new content on such a frequent basis but it’s become very easy for me.

Honestly, I am quite preoccupied with my writing.  So anything notable, memorable, funny, sad or surprising that occurs during my day has the potential to become a blog post. I can’t tell you how many times Mr. Incredible has heard me say “I’m gonna blog about that”. And I can’t tell you how many times he’s responded, “please don’t!”

So, if you’re having trouble creating content for your blog just think about all the amazing things that happen in your day: The homeless man you help on the street corner, a co worker that has body odor, a great movie you saw, your secret crush…any of these things can be a blog post. I guarantee there will be someone who can relate to what you write. And the more you post, the easier it becomes. Good luck with posting.  And keep this in mind: Blogging is certainly cheaper than therapy!

Team Blackberry

Sometimes I take pictures of myself…lots and lots of pictures of myself. My phone, which I’ve had about two months, has this fabulous flash that makes me look fantastic in pictures. I love it.

I’m really pleased with my Blackberry Torch. When I went in to buy a new cell phone I had my mind set on an iPhone, but not my heart. I only considered an iPhone because Mr. Incredible thinks his iPhone is the best thing since sliced cheese. So instead of listening to him constantly make fun of my Blackberry I decided to buy an iPhone.

Once I got to the store I panicked. I just couldn’t do it. I loved my Blackberry Curve. And while it was time for an upgrade I wasn’t ready to switch over to an iPhone . I’m team Blackberry all the way!

The sales associate, sensing my displeasure with the iPhone, pointed me to the Torch. I wanted the convenience of  a touch screen but the ease of a keyboard. And with the Torch I get both all in one phone.

I’m 100% happy with my Blackberry Torch and I’ll probably continue taking millions of photos of myself. And just in case you were wondering….NO I  WAS NOT at work when I took this photo. #lying

What type of cell phone do you have? What’s your favorite feature of your phone?

Bernie,The Blackberry Gets A Bath

My phone has been acting a little screwy lately. I haven’t been receiving any email or Facebook updates. So, I reluctantly took it to the AT&T store to get some expert advice. I was apprehensive about going to the store because- above all else- I hate, absolutely hate, when people touch my phone.

I think I have a slight case of OCD or ADHD or whatever you call it when you’re obsessed with various things. Well, I’m obsessed with decreasing my exposure to other people’s germs. I DO NOT touch public doorknobs. I DO NOT shake hands. I always keep Clorox wipes with me; and I spray Lysol profusely.

So, you can imagine how I feel about my new Blackberry Torch. I didn’t want to go to the service center because I knew that a salesman would have to put his muggy hands on my phone. And boy were his hands muggy! The dirt under his fingernails was so thick I’m sure he had not washed his hands in a few days.

I was so disgusted. After a certain point I began to care very little about my nonexistant email alerts and just wanted my phone back.  As the salesman slithered his fingers all over my phone I daydreamed about soaking Bernie, The Blackberry, in Pine Sol, rubbing alcohol, or anything that would free it of the germs that were being spread all over it.

Finally, the dirty salesman returned my phone and I rushed out of the store to scrub Bernie with an entire pack of wet wipes.

How do you feel about people using your cell phone? Are you disgusted by germs, too? Or am I just crazy?

Oprah in Atlanta

It was amazing; life-changing; spiritual. Finally, after nearly 20 years of waiting I got to see my girl, Oprah, in person. I was so close to her I could see her false eye-lashes. I hung on to every word she spoke. I tried my hardest to fight back my tears for fear of looking like a complete nut to the people around me.

She’s so damn smart. She just makes you want to be better. Oprah makes you think about things in a way that you’ve never thought about them before. She inspires you. She motivates you. I was in awe.

It’s  evident that she cares about the people around her. And that’s what I admire about her. As I’ve written before: When I see Oprah I see the possibility of what my life can become. Oprah is amazing.

Here are a few pictures from the event. I would have had much more but my stupid a** camera died and I was unable to retrieve any of my other pictures. How sad!
